Freyberg defended their Twenty20 premier crown with a 44-run victory over United yesterday.

After batting first and putting on 161 for eight on the back of 50 from Hayden Madsen, 38 from Will Murrie and 35 from Dom Rayner, Freyberg restricted United to 117 for nine.

Nine United batsman made single figures with only Andy Mackay (59) providing the scorers with work to do.

Grayson Harwood (3-30) and Murrie (3-25) put the brakes on the United batting lineup, which was missing Scott Larsen.

Earlier, United leg-spinner Nick Grieve took four for 28, including a hat-trick, to ensure his side had a total that was in their grasp to chase.

Freyberg captain Luke Murray said it was a good effort.

"We were pretty rapt. I think we bat quite low, we've got good batting depth and we managed to set a good total. Our fielding was pretty top-notch as well."

Putting 161 on the board wouldn't fill most captains with confidence in a Twenty20 match, but Murray had faith in his side.

"I was confident it was enough. The pitches are still moving around a bit and they're a bit slow."

Freyberg emerged from the group stages with wins over Palmerston North Boys' High School and Old Boys, while United beat Marist and Palmerston on their way to the final.
